The historic three-acre Young Family Ranch homestead is located at 260 Oregon Street in Weaverville, Trinity County, CA. It contains the Young Ranch house surrounded by sprawling grounds with a large barn (circa 1800s), numerous outbuildings, heritage fruit trees, berry patches, vegetable gardens, lawns, pasture, a small forest, wetland, and an ephemeral stream. The agricultural land, which had been in the Young family since 1889, was placed in trust by brothers Allen and Robert Young. The bachelors stipulated that after their deaths the property be maintained and used in ways compatible with their present use and that benefit the community of Weaverville. It was deeded to Trinity Trust in 2001 as an endowed community agricultural trust property with a directive for the property’s future public uses to model good gardening and agricultural production practices, using methods to build soil and vegetation health, and provide children and adults with learning opportunities about agriculture, conservation and the effects of human interaction with nature, table gardens and pasture.
The Young Family Ranch has hosted a series of educational events for children and their families about gardening, nutrition, and natural resources. Events have included the Weaverville Summer Day Camp, community plant and seed exchanges, and community supported agriculture. Free community workshops on a variety of topics have been held such as good gardening practices, healthy soils and composting, fruit tree care, water conservation, rainwater harvesting, food preservation, beekeeping, mushroom inoculation, backyard poultry raising, plant identification, plant propagation and sustainable agriculture. Other public-benefit uses of the Ranch have included University of California Cooperative Extension Service offices, Forestry Management workshops, nutrition education programs, 4-H Program, and Master Gardener Pro-gram. We welcome your suggestions and ideas for appropriate uses and programs for the Young Family Ranch to benefit the community.
In 2012 a public restroom facility and sidewalks were constructed, greatly improving disabled persons’ access these community offerings.
